Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
By Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith

FINALLY!!! I’m finally doing review again!!! I’m so sorry that I was being less active recently, since I had two MUN conference in two weeks and tons of activities waiting for me to attend. But…I have done it!!! I finished Pride and Prejudice and Zombies!!!! And I’m now about to show you my review!!!!
So as you might guess from the title, it’s a book based on Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, one of the beloved classics among the world and the required book for every high school student in Taiwan. (And my current textbook for Novel!!!!) However…zombies? Interesting choice…but it definitely fit the original story.

“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains.” So begins Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, a bold reimagining of Jane Austen’s classic novel. As our story opens, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton—and the dead are returning to life. Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she’s soon distracted by the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers—and even more violent sparring on the bloodsoaked battlefield. Complete with romance, heartbreak, swordfights, cannibalism, and thousands of rotting corpses, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is an audacious retelling of English literature’s most enduring novel.

If it’s so perfect, why it only got three stars? The content is basically the same as the original story, the words and conversations as well, only a little part was changed. “Of all the weapons she had commanded, Elizabeth knew the least of love; and of all the weapons in the world, love was the most dangerous.” Some brilliant quotes and sentences were made inside the books. I love it, and how the story was arranged…but somehow, since it was almost entirely the same…I felt boring in some part, and less amazed while reading through the story, since…as you might know…it is pride and prejudice based. And unfortunately…I watched endless times of the movie and endless time of the books…if I recalled right…I got five different edition of Pride and Prejudice. (I know I’m insane…but please tell me how to resist such beautiful books and classic cover?)

So…for a Pride and Prejudice fan in want of some zombies, I totally recommend you this book, it contains everything you need—romance, handsome characters, great written, adventures…you shall enjoy this book, I hereby announce. However…if you read as much retelling as I do… (Although I might not read that much…but enough.) This retelling seems to be lack of novel and innovative ideas…so…let’s hope the second and the third book will be better!!!!
